Manuel Almunia believes Arsenal can re-establish themselves in the title race by winning their next "three or four" games. The London club appeared to have fallen out of contention following recent defeats by Manchester United and Chelsea but having beaten Liverpool 1-0 on Wednesday they are only six points off the top.
On Wednesday, Chelsea lost 2-1 to Everton and United drew 1-1 with Aston Villa.
"We saw the results [of Chelsea and United] and it was positive for us," said Almunia, Arsenal's goalkeeper. "Now if we win three or four games in a row we will be back in the title race. From the dressing room before the [Liverpool] game, everyone was switched on. I am happy with the character of the team. It is not possible for a team that wants to be top of the table not to show character."
Arsene Wenger's side will face Sunderland a week tomorrow before playing Stoke, Burnley, Hull, West Ham and Birmingham.
"We cannot say anything when we don't play well," said Almunia. "Against United we were not on our game and against Chelsea we switched off. But there are only small points we need to improve, not technically or tactically, but personally.
"Fortunately, our manager has got a lot of patience. He is a good man because after Chelsea, he continued to spoil us. He understands that we are a young side and that we are still growing up."
The midfielder Cesc Fabregas has this week been linked with a move to Barcelona, although he and the Catalan club's president, Joan Laporta, have denied that a deal has taken place.
"Cesc is a symbol of the club and for the people here, he is the best," said Almunia. "He gives everything to the game and it will be sad if he has to go. But that is if he has to leave, I don't know."
The French winger Samir Nasri has recovered from a blow to the head suffered against Liverpool, but concerns over Andrey Arshavin and Alex Song remain.
Wenger said: "Unfortunately we have lost Alex with a medial knee ligament problem. I hope he will be available for next week, but it is not for sure. Arshavin looks to be a hamstring problem. We have to assess that too."
